Double Quote of the Week
“On a Fox News panel discussing Tiger Woods, Brit Hume said, perfectly accurately: ‘The extent to which he can recover, it seems to me, depends on his faith. He is said to be a Buddhist. I don’t think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith. So, my message to Tiger would be, Tiger, turn to the Christian faith and you can make a total recovery and be a great example to the world.’ Hume’s words, being 100 percent factually correct, sent liberals into a tizzy of sputtering rage, once again illustrating liberals’ copious ignorance of Christianity.” -Ann Coulter

I followed this link from the cidu site. That is amazing. Picking my jaw up off the floor, now…
January 7th, 2010 at 1:49 am
I can’t say I find either quote surprising. Dumb, yes, but not surprising.
I’ll go ahead and say what the more sane among us already know (what else are political blogs for?): choosing your religion based on things like its concepts of forgiveness and redemption is stupid. You choose a religion not because you like it, but because it is right. You can’t change what the truth is, and it makes no sense to chose any religion other than what you believe is the truth.
Unfortunately, nobody can agree on what the truth actually is. The truth can’t be arrived at by anything like logic, because if it could, we would know what it is. And choosing a religion based on any other criteria — like “faith”, whatever that is — makes no sense to me, but that’s getting into a different topic…
January 7th, 2010 at 1:52 am
Ann Coulter doesn’t think that any idea that isn’t hers has any value whatsoever. So a Christian who doesn’t understand Buddhism is fine, no problem, but someone who doesn’t understand Christianity (and who doesn’t understand it to be exactly, *exactly* what Ann says it is) is a horrible evil monster. And then she can whine persecution for not being put first, thought of as naturally superior to other people, not getting privileges she assumes is her due as a white Christian American, etc. (Bonus round: take away those privileges and watch her squeal “Discrimination”!)
The worst part is, this has nothing to do with liberal or conservative. This is simply egomania and attention whoring.
January 7th, 2010 at 5:39 am
Not to mention Britt Hume and Ann Coulter’s ignorance of Buddhism.
January 7th, 2010 at 7:27 am
I suppose that if you distill what Brit said to its essence: “I don’t THINK that faith offers….” - - you could argue that it has some claim to accuracy…

As I’ve said before, over on CIDU, I think the only reason anyone pays any attention at all to Ann Coulter is because she’s a moderately physically-attractive woman. If she looked like Rush Limbaugh, she wouldn’t be able to get airtime. At least Rush is occasionally witty and/or entertaining
January 7th, 2010 at 9:56 am
It also amazes me how cynical Hume’s comment is (and the resulting foam at the mouth support). As a Christian as well (although very liberal and therefore not truly Christian in Coulter’s opinion) I think it is the height of hypocrisy and cynicism to say essentially, “hey come on over here Tiger, we’ll let you off the hook for all that bad behavior if you join our clique!”
I mean, really, is that what it’s all about? I never knew.
January 7th, 2010 at 11:10 am
For some reason, this continues to stun me into speechlessness. The only comment I can muster up is that I don’t know what religion Hume is, but his statement ends up coming across as very misguided Christian propaganda. Stupid crap like this makes me embarassed to call myself a Christian, and I feel like I want to apologize to every Buddhist and everyone else in the world. It’s stupid crap like this that chased me out of the Republican Party.
January 7th, 2010 at 11:46 am
This whole thing just makes my head want to explode. I’m sure Brit Hume is a caring person (even though I disagree with just about anything he says), but he, as a Christian, should just leave Tiger Woods alone. He isn’t helping Woods by his comments. Hume is only serving himself in his self appointed role as God’s helper. This is hardly Christian. The whole pitting liberals vs conservative is hardly Christian either.
And what Hume and Ann Coulter don’t know about Buddhism is too vast to even comment upon.
January 7th, 2010 at 12:15 pm
Personally, what made this for me was the combination of Hume’s comment and Coulter’s amen.
In one sense you have to feel sorry for Coulter, because she knows that she’s 2007’s Sarah Palin. All that’s left her now is to tag along with other people’s outrageous statements.
How this must gall her, knowing that she’s so dramatically smarter than Sarah Palin.
January 7th, 2010 at 2:39 pm
Upon more consideration…. what if Tiger was a Christian and a prominent Muslim said the following :
‘The extent to which he can recover, it seems to me, depends on his faith. He is said to be a Christian. I don’t think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Islamic faith. So, my message to Tiger would be, Tiger, turn to the Islamic faith and you can make a total recovery and be a great example to the world’
You can bet that every TV evangelist, conservative republican and right wing talking head would be howling indignantly demanding an apology. It is funny that when the shoe is on the other foot, the tolerance for this kind of talk become non-existent. As I recall … Jesus was none too fond of hypocrites. .’
January 7th, 2010 at 3:00 pm
Bill — I often wonder how much of the vitriol that A.C. spews she actually believes. IMHO she is a media whore (my apologies to all the prostitutes out there) and often said things with the specific intention of drawing attention to her. She is like a child shouting “look at me, look at me” . Personally, I am grateful that these days her air time is pretty much limited to Fox.
Palin on the other hand believes every word she spouts. Sad but true.
January 7th, 2010 at 4:38 pm
This proves that Ann Coulter literally doesn’t know what a fact is. Hume’s opinion of Buddhism versus Christianity is not a “fact.”
January 7th, 2010 at 4:50 pm
As for Coulter, I find myself unable to hear anything she says anymore, the same way I’m able to walk past the screaming cursing crazy man who’s always on the corner without letting his loud insanity penetrate my cone of silence. She’s just a buzzing gnat that feeds on the bile and ire of others, and I refuse to give her a single ounce of my energy. If I thought she had any power maybe I’d be scared, but her 15 nanoseconds of fame seem to be long gone. Kinda renews my faith, maybe there are no conservative whackos who are whacko-enough to pay any attention to her.
January 7th, 2010 at 4:56 pm
Nicole, I think we’re in agreement here: I think Coulter is much too intelligent to believe the absurd things she says (whereas Palin is not and does). Coulter probably also realizes that nobody went into “a sputtering rage” at Hume’s coments, and that liberals don’t hate and fear her. I swear, I’ve never heard anybody so thrilled at the thought of people hating and fearing her.
January 7th, 2010 at 8:30 pm
Atheists know a hell of a lot more about Christianity than Christians do. Paul’s version of Christianity doesn’t fully line up with what Jesus taught, and today nobody follows either version. Do you think Ann Coulter will ever sell all her possessions, give the money to the poor and follow Jesus? No, and you see her arrayed in more splendor than the lilies of the field and the birds of the air.
January 7th, 2010 at 11:45 pm
I agree, liberals and atheists definitely do not fear A.C. I am fairly active in the liberal and atheist blogosphere, and ther was no sputtering. I think most people view A.C. like a cat that vomits on your rug … it’s annoying and bothersome that you have to clean up the mess she made.
Nor was there any ’sputtering’ … I would gauge most of the reactions Brit Hume to be something along the lines of ‘how stupid can you be’

Quite right, clepsius; the poem of Signor Lloyd Moon is every bit as bracing and maritime as Vona’s work, which I am quite keen on - but I don’t see the need for a foeminist reading, nor an attack or defence of Uncle Sam.
